HOW TO: CANDLE 101

ETERNAL FLAME

Candles have long held the power to transform a space, evoking warmth, serenity, and a touch of enchantment. While we’re certainly glad for lightbulbs, though uncomfortable with this pending, scandalous LED mandate, there’s always something to be said for the element of FIYAHHH and the power contained within. To ensure your candles burn bright and radiate to the fullest, it's crucial to embrace consistent practice for candle care and selection. Let’s not be all willy-nilly about it.

  • Always, always, always trim wicks to a quarter-inch before each use, ensuring a clean and steady burn that maximizes a candle’s lifespan.

  • Trim any mushrooming or excess carbon buildup and spruce up any sooty bits, every single time.

  • Keep candles away from drafts to maintain an even flame.

  • Before extinguishing, try to ensure that your candle has burned long enough so that the melted wax has reached the perimeter of the container. If you blow her out too quickly and continue to relight, you’ll end up with a tunnel effect and lots of wasted product.

  • Never burn a sculptural candle without placing her on some sort of fireproof base. A ceramic dish will do. A marble trivet ain’t a bad choice either.

  • Make sure tapers are well situated and secure in their holders – if you’ve got a loose fit, melt a little off the candle and use that hot wax as glue to get a steady hold if necessary.

  • When selecting candles, consider the quality of the wax, opting for clean-burning options like soy or beeswax, which release minimal soot and pollutants. Better is better.

  • Choose a scent to match and set the mood – think uplifting citrus for the kitchen, soothing lavender for the bath, bright florals for the foyer, fresh greens for spring, or deeper fragrances like woods and amber for cooler months. You know the vibe - trust your instincts.

  • Use cool tools to elevate your candle time like flameless lighters with a long reach or an elegant snuffer that makes lights out a snap.

  • Never leave her unattended!
