Pioneer of the New York School of Abstract Expressionists, Latvian/American artist Mark Rothko was born in Dvinsk, Russia, (now Daugavpils, Latvia) but later immigrated with his family to Portland, Oregon before forging his career in NYC. His color field paintings remain the greatest legacy of his works, with the most famous and well-known going beyond the 2D and inspiring visceral reactions related to a spectrum of emotions that comprise the human spirit. Here, mossy green and grey are punctuated with a dash of cobalt.
