Latvian/American artist Mark Rothko was born in Dvinsk, Russia, (now Daugavpils, Latvia) but later immigrated with his family and settled in Portland, Oregon. His multi-colored abstract paintings remain the finest legacy of his works, less about color theory and more about the emotional storm created by color. It's not what the picture is of, but what chaos lies beneath.
